about

Lingua Lustra’s “Cygnus” feels massive in every possible way: from his embrace of Eliane Radigue’s unique approach of sound to the overall duration itself, it all works. Drones swallow the listener whole, for the pieces feel akin to gigantic structures, absolutely vast. A geography of sorts comes to define these pieces while they strongly resemble fully formed symphonies. Everything about the sound feels overwhelming, for Lingua Lustra incorporates such exquisite detail, making the listener aware of every single possible variation on the theme. By allowing these songs a certain cyclical sensibility, they garner a hypnotic, almost hallucinatory aspect. Nicely setting the stage for what follows “Ancient Lights” introduces the first disc. Gradually the low-register bass rumbles gain such tremendous power, helping the entire piece to levitate. Found transmissions give “Solar Flare” a mysterious aura. The grey scale found industrial sound of “Tonnur” explores empty spaces with ease. Hard to pin down “Delta Cygni” feels deeply unusual while it drifts back down to Earth, occasionally referencing nearly recognizable instrumentation. A whole cycle takes place on the beautiful “Epsilon Cygni”. Wintry atmospheres help ensure that “Icicles” feels perfectly suited to its name, with distant washes gives it a darker feeling. Easily the best piece is the giddiness of the ecosystem of “Perihelion”. Bringing the whole album to a thoughtful conclusion is the subtle groove of “Surfing On Love Waves”. With “Cygnus” Lingua Lustra chooses to amplify the small lands, the peripheral sounds that so often toil away in obscurity. Beach Sloth
